Lochaber

Learners
Adult Basic Education (ABE) in Lochaber provides 1:1 learning for adults who would like to feel more confident about their reading, writing and number skills.
Some learners want to be able to help their young children with homework and others would like to feel happier about dealing with their finances.
Changes happen at work and people have to deal with more paper work, which can be stressful if they do not feel confident about reading, writing or spelling.
We have also supported people who are trying to pass the entrance tests for the services, for example Air Force and the Police.
Sometimes people are worried they are being left behind when it comes to computers so we offer a very basic course to get to grips with the basics.
We also provide classes for people from other countries, who now live here, and wish to improve their English.

Volunteer Tutors
Help is usually provided on a 1:1 basis by volunteer tutors. Volunteers do not need any experience or qualifications as we provide training. They do need an ability to get on with people, be a good listener, have lots of patience, be able to take people as they find them, and a sense of humour helps too. The training course is accredited by the Scottish Qualifications Authority.

Awareness Raising
We also deliver an awareness training session which is aimed at staff or volunteers in projects and agencies which have face to face contact with people who may have this type of difficulty.

Project and Initiatives

ESOL Project
In the past few years, migrant workers with ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) needs have moved to the Highlands. A number of providers and Highland Adult Literacies - are collaborating to explore how best to provide services and develop resources for this group. Funding for this work has been awarded by the European Social Fund.
