Many literacy organisations - both nationally and internationally - now have their own websites. As use of the Internet becomes more commonplace, and research suggests growth of use by adults in the UK is one of the highest of any country, it provides a useful tool in raising awareness of literacy issues and informing colleagues, and those interested in this area, of developments taking place.

Purpose:
  • To enhance communication between Adult Basic Education and learners and tutors
  • To celebrate the success of learners
  • To attract new learners and volunteer tutors
  • To disseminate good practice
  • To enhance partnership with link agencies
  • To attract new partner organisations
  • To raise awareness of adult literacy issues

Data Protection: Any information about learners, tutors and staff featured on the site will be subject to the Data Protection Act. Data will be maintained in keeping with the Data Protection Act and will not be passed on or sold to any other organisation without the permission of the person concerned, unless it is a legal requirement.

Photographs:
  • Photographs of learners, tutors and ABE staff will only be published when written permission to do so has been obtained.
  • Wherever possible group shots will be used on the website, rather than photographs of individuals.
  • Where appropriate first names only, or pseudonyms, will accompany photographs.
  • Images of public events organised by ABE will be considered fair use.

Personal details:
  • As the Internet is a world wide medium care must be taken in any disclosure of personal information.
  • Learners and tutors featured on the website will be identified by their first name only, if they have given written permission for this to be published.
  • Learners and tutors can opt to be identified by a pseudonym of their choosing or withhold their name completely.
  • Only ABE staff contact details (office e-mail addresses, location, telephone number and fax number) will be published on the website.

Individuals' Work, Case Studies, and Quotations:
  • Learners' work, personal stories and quotes will only be published when written permission to do so has been obtained.
  • Where appropriate first names only, or pseudonyms, will accompany examples of learners' work or personal stories or quotes.

Consent forms:
  • A consent form for permission to publish photographs is required to be completed before such material appears on the website.

  • A data protection statement is included on the consent forms.
  • A copyright statement is included on the consent forms.
  • Consent forms are written in accordance with European Easy-to-Read Information guidelines

Copyright:
  • The website will be protected by UK copyright laws
  • A statement asserting this will appear on each webpage.
  • Permission for reproduction will be limited to private and educational use.
  • Rights for an individual's work published on the ABE site will remain with them.
  • Written consent will be obtained before an individual's work appears on the site.
