Learners
Adult Basic Education is a free, informal and confidential service for adults who want to improve their reading, writing and number skills. Tuition is provided on a one to one or small group basis at a time and place mutually agreed by the learners and tutors.
Learning is tailored to individual needs and adults come to us for many reasons. We work with learners who require help with their driving theory test, filling in forms, preparing for interviews, basic IT skills, helping children with their homework and craftwork using literacy & numeracy skills. We also work with students who need support with college/distance learning courses.
In addition, we can provide one to one or group tuition for people who have settled here from another country and wish to improve their English.
Projects and Initiatives
Pilot Project - Wii Sessions in Portree Library
Wii Session will be held in Portree Library from November 2010 for anyone over the age 16. The sessions will engage adults in exercise, literacy, numeracy & developing social skills. The session will be held in the Library with a view to encouraging participants to read more and develop their reading skills further.
ESOL Project
There is a weekly class held in Portree throughout the year for ESOL learners, and learners at any level can join. During the summer months, classes can be held in other areas of Skye & Lochalsh and are organised depending on demand.
Literacy & Numeracy Skills through Craft
ABE is supporting West Highland College in delivering weekly Craft Classes in Portree for adults with additional support needs. Participants learn skills to plan their task, work with sizes & numbers to measure materials and then complete their item. A similar class is being supported by ABE with TAG members in Portree and the items they make are sold through RagTag in Balmacara.
Volunteer Tutors
Tutors come from various backgrounds and previous experience is not required as all volunteers attend an initial training course, ITALL; Introductory Training for Adult Literacies Learning. This course gives an insight into the experiences of adults who need help with literacy/numeracy skills. Tutors receive ongoing support, and in-service workshops and meetings are held periodically to enhance existing skills.
