Tutors
People in this county are spread over a wide area and we are fortunate to have tutors in East, Central and West Sutherland. There are twenty tutors in all, four of whom are able to teach ESOL.

PDA certificated ITALL courses are provided for prospective tutors and people working in allied fields such as librarians or mentors for New Futures Sutherland. Training is also provided in Dyslexia Awareness, the course covering a range of Specific Learning Difficulties. Tutors are encouraged to attend workshops and training events as part of their development.

There is a particular need for tutors in N and NW Sutherland so if you would like to help people achieve their potential and open up opportunities for them, please contact the Co-ordinator.

Students
Because of the number and spread of tutors, students do not wait long before beginning their studies. All students complete an Individual Learning Plan and have regular reviews of their progress. A range of accredited SQA courses is offered, in particular SCQF Core Skills Communication and Numeracy. Students may also be supported while doing distance learning courses and helped with specific aims such as the Driving Theory or Life in the UK tests.

The service is grateful to learning centres and Community Education for providing friendly locations for learners. The four Sutherland Learning Centres at Lochinver, Kinlochbervie, Lairg and Brora liaise with the ABE service to provide further courses and progression routes. It is not uncommon for a student to be enrolled both in ABE and in a learning centre and therefore able to take advantage of a range of learning opportunities.

A wide variety of study materials is available, traditional and computer based, and every effort is made to ensure that learners' needs are met.

Projects and Initiatives
Adult Basic Education (Sutherland) is a partner in a project run in the learning centres – Skills for Living and Working, Sutherland. This project aims to develop participants’ skills and prepare them for employment.

Big Plus
ABE is delighted to help students referred through Big Plus and other government initiatives.
