Tutors
People in this county are spread over a wide area and we are fortunate to have tutors in East, Central, West and NW Sutherland. There are ten tutors in all, four of whom are able to teach ESOL.

Fast track ITALL courses are provided for tutors who are already practitioners. A full ITALL course is to be run shortly for 4 prospective tutors. Training is also provided in Dyslexia Awareness, the course covering a range of Specific Learning Difficulties.

Students
Because of the number and spread of tutors, students do not wait long before beginning their studies. All students complete an Individual Learning Plan and have regular reviews of their progress. A range of accredited SQA courses is offered. The service is grateful to learning centres and Commuity Education for providing friendly locations for learners.

A wide variety of study materials is available, traditional and computer based, and every effort is made to ensure that learners' needs are met.

Projects and Initiatives

Big Plus in Libraries
The Big Plus in Libraries is part of a national campaign to de-stigmatise low literacy and encourage adults to come forward and engage in literacy learning. It builds upon the work which is already taking place between the library services and adult literacies providers.
Working with Learning Connections (Communities Scotland) - which funded the initiative - and the Scottish Library and Information Council (SLIC), Highland Adult Literacies, Highland Libraries and ABE have played an active role in the development of the project. Highland was asked to do this because of the strength of partnership working at a local level and the examples of good practice which have come from this.
